…About the Garden
Since 2000, Camp Stevens' Organic Garden has grown from being a small vegetable
and herb garden into two year round productive sites with about 2 acres under cultivation, striving to provide
vegetables, fruit, flowers, herbs, craft material and sacred space for
reflection; nourishing our residents and guests. In the gardens, there are
hundreds of varieties of plants and fruit trees, many of which are rare,
heirloom types. In our greenhouse and coldframes, seeds are propagated and
nurtured until planting time. The compost piles, created from food waste
and other natural materials, contribute nutrients which are essential to
building healthy soil. Our evolving methods of French intensive hand dug
beds, chemical free plant care, and permaculture principles demonstrate
practical techniques for a variety of visitors. We utilize cob construction
(an alternative sustainable building technique using clay, sand, and straw)
for garden structures.
Our garden serves as an outdoor classroom for children in our summer camp
program and our 6th grade outdoor education programs. Adults also have the
opportunity to learn in the garden during our numerous Saturday and full
weekend gardening workshops, or by joining our weekly garden tours and occasional
craft days when visiting for a weekend conference or retreat.
