Our staff is a dynamic collection of people from around the globe, living and learning to do our part to make the world a better place. Through the guidance of our mission we aspire to be thoughtful stewards of the camp and warmly welcome all the people we serve. We invite you to get to know our team and our community. Peter BergstromExecutive Director This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Peter has served as the Executive Director of Camp Stevens since 1972. He is also Executive Director of the national organization Episcopal Camps and Conference Centers, Inc., and is an honorary Canon of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. He is a board member and one of the founders of the Volcan Mountain Preserve Foundation, and serves on the Steering Committee of the environmental group, CaliforniaShe Interfaith Power and Light. When not working, he may be found backpacking and fly-fishing in a favorite Sierra stream or fishing from a kayak in Baja California.
Since 1975, John has been Peter's 'right-hand man'. He loves the out-of-doors and finding adventures in the natural world. Fly fishing, hiking, backpacking, car camping and being on the beach are just some of his favorites. He loves teaching both campers and staff about the outdoors, camp activities and especially the challenge course. Lately John has had a hard time finding time for any of these, as he has been working with the insurance company, and department of planning and land use in getting our building plans approved.
Since graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in art, Abbey has followed her passions outside and landed at Camp Stevens. She has enjoyed various forms of outdoor leadership from wilderness trips in Coastal Maine to organic farming in Kauai. In her spare time she enjoys printmaking, trail running, and anything in the sun.
Camp Stevens's food philosophy offers Susan the daily opportunity to embody integrity in the meals she prepares for our guests. Coupled with two-plus acres of edible organic gardens, this is a delicious slice of a chef’s heaven on earth. Two decades of culinary adventures spanning two continents groomed her for this position, and she's thankful for the creative latitude to do her best.
Ryan has been the organic gardener at Camp Stevens since 2005. He cares for our farm/garden, its soil, bio-diversity, and the hundreds of varieties of fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs that these systems support. In addition, Ryan is interested in landscaping with drought tolerant; habitat providing, native plants and helping our guests connect with their ecology in the gardens and in the wilderness surrounding our facilities. In his other life Ryan enjoys good food, good company, home-grown music, and climbing rocks. Jeff BassettSupport Coordinator/Resident Intern Staff Jeff is excited about the opportunity for new beginnings at Camp Stevens. His interests include community living, discovering new music, and standing for truth, justice, all that stuff. In his free time, he enjoys cycling, climbing, and using the oxford comma.
A 40-year resident of Camp Stevens, Vicki enjoys hiking, backpacking, kayaking and exploring wild places and remembering them with her camera and paintbrush. And in her spare time, she's technology coordinator at Spencer Valley School, and board member of both the Volcan Mountain Preserve Foundation and Spencer Valley Educational Association, Inc.
Jeff is a San Diego native who is a graduate of Saint Didacus Elementary, Poway High, and The UCSD Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. He is interested in local and global sustainability issues, nutrition, permaculture, and especially loves cooking Mexican, Mediterranean, and Thai dishes.
Zach is a recent graduate of Indiana State University and is eager to explore the West Coast! He enjoys using Twizzlers as drinking straws, using the word 'dude' as much as possible, and being the only person you have ever met from Indiana.
From camper, to counselor, to staff member, to Summer Camp Director, Trevor has enjoyed his exciting relationship with Camp Stevens over the years. His current role as coordinator for our newest program, SEEDS: Eco-Logic for Teens, allows him to work with students, teachers and the camp staff to form creative and relevant outdoor experiences. Originally from the Los Angeles area, Trevor spent eight years in Massachusetts until returning to work and live at his home-away-from home, Camp Stevens, in the Fall of 2009. In his free time, Trevor loves running on the diverse trails of San Diego County, and going on road trips with his wife, Ashley.
Ashley first came to Camp Stevens as a 10 year old camper, and most recently rejoined the staff in September of 2009, after 9 years of living in Boston, and working in legal, high tech and event marketing. Ashley has the amazing job of getting people of all ages invested in and energized about nature and long-term environmental sustainability through online, school and social media outreach. When Ashley's not working, she's probably drinking iced coffee or catching up on her Netflix queue.
Glennis comes from San Diego and is excited to be living/volunteering up in Julian. She enjoys pop cultural trivia, Harry Potter, and discovering new music that she can add to her playlist. On her free time, Glennis enjoys working at the library, hanging with friends, and creating new food/drink inventions. You'll most likely catch her in a Harry Potter shirt.
Kate is a recent graduate of UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Environmental Studies. When not working you can usually find her reading, baking, or watching a movie, often with a glass of orange juice or iced coffee at her side. Other interests include hiking, swimming and learning anything new. Joe KieferRopes Course Coordinator/Resident Intern Staff This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Joe heartily enjoys bikes, banjos, burritos, poetry, and contrived puns. When he’s not doing laundry or telling cheesy knock-knock jokes, he likes listening to obscure music and jumping over things. Nicole MillerResident Intern Staff Nicole recently graduated and is ready for adventure! She moved out west from Pittsburgh, PA in search of mountain living and year-round sun.
Garrett PhelpsStaff Volunteer When not on Volcan Mountain to catch a High Definition Sunrise, Garrett enjoys writing poetry and talking philosophy over green tea, the ocean, and desert thunderstorms. Native to San Diego, Garrett was a counselor and staff at camp in the past, and as an independent film maker he is currently living at camp to capture and share the beauty, environmental stewardship, and incredible people and spirit of Camp Stevens with the greater community. Impromptu guitar playing and road trips with family and friends are for sure in there as well. Coreen WalshRetreat Center Coordinator Coreen, a former Phoenician, recently graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. She loves being part of the Camp Stevens community, where each day she spends time with wonderful people and always has new adventures, e.g., hiking Volcan mountain at sunrise or learning to use a chainsaw. One of her other favorite places to be is Kampala, Uganda - particularly for the mangos, music and motorcycles.. Eleanor WarnerStaff Volunteer Eleanor is excited to be living a third year now in Julian, where she gets to enjoy mosaic-making, tree-pruning, and other assorted pursuits. Amidst her involvement here with seasonal outdoor education programs, sporadic dish sessions, focused mosaic marathons, and twilight chicken chases, she is especially excited to be heading up a staff-wide effort to reinvent camp's Outdoor Education Manual. |
