Assistant Wilderness Trip Leader

Camp Stevens has a summer intern position opening for an Assistant Wilderness Trip Leader from June 8th to August 22, 2008. We are seeking a self-motivated, organized, and experienced outdoor enthusiast to work with the Wilderness Trip Leader. The position is an opportunity to learn more about what it takes to plan, prepare, and lead a holistic wilderness development program for campers aged 12-18. Trips this summer are 5 to 10 days in length with limited time spent at camp, including backpacking in the Eastern Sierras, rock climbing in some of Southern California’s best areas, and rafting on the Kern River. Qualified applicants will have had experience staffing week long backpacking trips, a Wilderness First Aid certification or willingness to obtain, ability to hike 10 miles a day carrying a 50 pound pack, ability to lead belay and feel comfortable at heights of up to 50 feet. Salary is $2400 + Room & Board for 11 weeks.

In its beautiful, unspoiled setting, Camp Stevens serves as a point of contact between human beings and the natural world. It seeks to serve as a model of ecological responsibility and to help individuals and groups reclaim an active stewardship of God's creation. It will also serve as a resource center to stimulate better environmental stewardship throughout the Dioceses of Los Angeles and San Diego and beyond. The trip staff will spend limited time at Camp Stevens; however, the program incorporates as much of the mission statement as possible.
