CAMP STEVENS DAMAGED BY FIRE ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2007

Thank You!

There are so many people to thank that it hard to know where to start. The staff, board members, counselors, campers, program participants and retreat groups, thank each of you for your help.

Fire Fighters

We are very thankful for the fire fighters from all over California that helped to protect Camp Stevens. Locally, we thank all of the Julian/Cuyamaca Volunteer Fire Department, their Chief Kevin Dubler, and especially fireman David Southcott who was the first to arrive on site with the water tender, and single handedly (with a hose of course) made a stand at the parking lot, saving the staff homes until further support arrived. In addition to the air crews that made a huge number of drops on the camp property, we want to thank the following fire crews:

Mt. Laguna CDF, Shelter Valley Volunteers, OcotilloWells Volunteers, Inter Mountain Volunteers, City of El Cajon, City of Lakeside, Chula Vista, Palomar USFS, City of Encinitas, City of Carlsbad, Rancho Sante Fe Fire, Norco CDF, Bonita, Rainbow CDF, City of Coronado, Monterey CDF, La Cima CDF, US Forest Service Crews for Pine Hills and other locations.

Other thanks goes out to those who helped on Saturday, the day of the fire.

• The Cowboy - who pulled off the highway at the first sight of smoke, and then started to water down the roof of the director's house.
• Larry Noble - our contractor, who called at the first sign of smoke, and then came to help with evacuation.
• CHP and the Sheriff's department for helping with the evacuation of our groups.
• St. Duns tan's Choir and Karios Xian Church, who were both here at the camp, and evacuated quickly, leaving most of their belonging, and ultimately losing it all in the buildings that were lost.
• Officer Keith Dalton of the San Diego County Sheriffs who walked around the camp around 6:pm on Saturday with his cell phone and informed us of not only what was lost, but also what was saved.
• Sherry Horton, Spencer Valley and Volcan View Farm for opening up and giving the staff a place to spend the night.
• Wynola Pizza for providing a place for the staff to gather and to have dinner together.
